Types of sewer pipes
Types of sewer pipes
The sewer system is a mandatory component of any private cottage, enterprise or multi -storey building. Thanks to this system, we have the opportunity to send small and liquid waste for further filtering and water treatment, which ultimately forms a cycle of water in nature without unnecessary losses of useful resources. To date, you can find a variety of types of sewer pipes, which differ in their cost, appearance, chemical and physical properties, as well as the scope. Let’s take a closer look at these types.
So, first of all, reinforced concrete sewer pipes should be distinguished. Those, in turn, are divided into smooth, bell-shaped and folded. Produce such pipes from concrete, crushed granite and metal. The main production method is serial, which indicates low cost and wide distribution. On sale you can find reinforced concrete pipes of both ordinary and increased strength. Increased strength is usually needed for multi-storey buildings and laying external sewers, where water and soil pressure is especially high. The outer part of the sewer always puts forward more requirements for connecting elements than the inner. In the first case, a big role is played by the temperature difference and pressure, which must be endured so that an emergency does not occur.
Ceramic sewer pipes are most often used for private houses. The inner surface of such a pipe is very smooth, but the overall strength here is not as great as we would like. Both surfaces are treated with a special glaze, thanks to which water does not penetrate through the walls of the binder and does not form a leak. In modern times, cast-iron traditional pipes have been actively replaced by ceramic ones.
There are also glass sewer pipes, which are still classified as exotic. These are expensive pipes that are fastened together at the seams with special glue. They are made of molybdenum or window glass. The inner surface here is perfectly flat and smooth, which allows water to flow freely and not meet resistance in its path. Glass pipes last a long time and do not react with chemicals, do not clog in the lumen, do not form build-ups and do not rust. The cost of such pipes is not the lowest, and its strength is not always sufficient for firm confidence in the functioning of the entire system.
Traditional cast iron sewer pipes have been used for a long time. These are strong binding elements that are not at all afraid of high pressure, low or high temperatures and drops. They are perfect for laying sewers, both external and internal types. However, there are many disadvantages, one of which is too high cost and a lot of weight, which complicates the installation process. Cast iron pipes do not have sufficient smoothness of the inner surface, which leads to gradual clogging of the lumen and breakage.
The types of sewer pipes include plastic pipes, namely polypropylene pipes, PVC pipes, corrugated pipes. Let’s take a closer look at each of these types.
So, polypropylene sewer pipes are gray in color, have a smooth inner surface and low cost. They are absolutely indifferent to chemicals, do not form build-ups and are not subject to rust formations. However, they can only be used for a sewerage system in an internal environment, since the strength of the walls is not sufficient for an external system.
Polyvinyl chloride pipes in plain gray or brown. They can be low, medium and high strength. This type is widespread and in demand on the market today, but again, it is used only for interior work.
As for corrugated pipes, they are the most optimal for laying an external sewage system. In this case, there is a perfectly smooth inner surface and a corrugated inner. Together they form an excellent rigidity, which is quite enough to withstand ground pressure.
